CPS Budget Status and LSC Meeting Update

Filed under: General and Misc — Jonathan Goldman at 8:17 pm on Friday, April 16, 2010

CPS continues to push back the release of the school budgets. Originally planned for the end of March, the latest rumor is that schools will be notified next week. While the situation has improved as the result of new law passed in Springfield that will save CPS $400 million in pension payments, the projected deficit is still between $300 – 600 million. Based on press reports, CPS is considering major cuts to pre-school programs, and increasing class sizes to 37 children across the system.

As a result of the changing timetable, the LSC meeting scheduled for this coming Monday is being postponed until Monday, April 26th at 6:00 pm. Hopefully we will have more information by then. Also, the Budget and Fundraising Committee will now meet on Friday April 23rd at 7:30 am.

The focus of the LSC meeting will be the budget for next year along with the School Improvement Plan (SIPAAA). We will be providing more information next week about the SIPAAA, so keep an eye out for it, and plan to attend the meeting on the 26th.

As soon as any information about the budget is available we’ll notify everyone.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Jonathan Goldman
LSC Chair

CPS Protest Event

Filed under: General and Misc — grace at 7:10 pm on Wednesday, April 14, 2010

REPORT CARD WEDNESDAY:

Give an F to the State of Illinois for School Funding

Event date:   April 21st

Time:           9:00am – 10:30am

Place:           James Thompson Center – 100 W. Randolph

Outside plaza at the corner of Randolph and Clark

Purpose:  This is a CPS multi-school parent-driven protest to express our outrage with the current state funding to our schools.

●Bring a Letter

Collect letters from your school addressed to your state representatives and state senators urging them for reform and the need for improved and sustained funding to our schools.  We will have a large collection box for your stamped letters. If you need a sample letter, contact us.

●Bring a Sign

Bring your own signs. Remember the focus of this event is state funding. Illinois has been at the bottom of the list in what it provides towards education for years. We were in bad shape before the budget crisis. We want fair and improved funding for our schools.

Children are welcome if their school is closed for report-card pick-up.

Check out the Facebook page, “CPS Parents for Fair Funding,” for information as well as graphics that can be downloaded and used for letters, flyers and signs.  If you have questions, contact Wendy Katten at .
