April 25, 2008

Dear Drummond Families,

April has been an extraordinary month. Our little school has so far: held three public garden meetings, approved and revised (based on public input) our garden plan, drawn together with the input of parents, teachers, students and community members what I believe to be the best SIPAAA this school has ever produced, kicked off an Ultimate Frisbee league, provided all of our students the opportunity to see The Chicago Ballet Company perform in our own gymnasium,  installed our second annual art exhibit, begun wok on creating a recycling room, distributed report cards and spoke to 94% of our parents regarding the progress of their children, held an LSC election and welcomed Early Childhood parents to yet another educational evening.

Before the month is finished we will be breaking ground on our long sought after garden project, implementing a safety procedure for drop-off and pick-up, hosting a poetry slam, hosting a science night for 5th and 6th grade parents while still providing the best education possible to our students. I am grateful to our teachers for every ounce of time and energy they give to our school and our students please recognize that not every school has a team of such smart, welcoming and dedicated faculty. I feel fortunate to work with such a strong team.

Sincerely,

Mark Neidlinger

Ground Breaking

After three years of discussion we are ready to realize our collaborative dream: the Garden Project. Old Veteran’s Construction will begin the process of securing our grounds for construction as early as Monday, April 28th. This will mean that as of next week our back lot will no longer be available for parking. I have confirmed with the contractor that adequate measures will be taken to avoid and issues with safety. They will have a six foot fence coordinating off the construction zone and that fence will be covered with a mesh netting to make certain that climbing cannot occur. Please assist us parents, in making sure that your children maintain a safe distance from all fencing and equipment. As you can guess, my number one concern will be the safety of our students and all my decision moving forward – regarding the garden - will be based upon this issue. We will have a few months of dust, dirt and concern before we can celebrate this fantastic accomplishment. Please be patient and as always, use caution for yourself and our students.

Clean out your medicine cabinet!

A number of you have expressed curiosity and concern over the terrible condition of my face and chest after our return from spring break and I thank you. A number of you were equally as kind by pretending nothing was unusual and engaging me regardless of these embarrassing scars. I urge each of you to check your medicine cabinets this weekend and toss anything that has expired. After a simple little blood test it was determined that my break-out was from having taken some (drastically) expired over the counter medication while visiting my folks in Florida over the break. (My parents are avid collectors of art and antiques and as I’ve recently learned, medication.) The good news is that I have great tales to taunt my parents with for years to come.

My sincere gratitude.

Happy Secretary’s Day

Lastly, the past several days have been difficult for our school. The LSC election seemed to spur a divisive nature within our school community. It is my biggest hope that we can repair the damage that has occurred and continue moving forward focusing purely on our students and providing them with a positive and safe environment that is based on mutual trust and positive energy. Please enjoy the weekend ahead, we have much work before us.

Hi, Folks,

If you missed any of the following posts from yesterday, please visit www.drummondlsc.org to catch up. I believe that some of the email notifications did not go out because our web host has a limit on the amount of emails sent out per hour, to prevent spam. When posts come in rapid succession, the amount of email generated may trigger this block. Therefore, if you are posting to the site, you may wish to wait until a couple of hours after the previous post’s notifications have gone out. I’ll look into getting our web host to ease some of these restrictions.

Recycled Art show ends Friday, April 25

Filed under: General and Misc — mzerkel at 12:18 pm on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Recycled Art show! The work will still be up for the rest of the week, so take a look if you haven’t already. For those who have work in the show: Ms. Rejman will make sure that the Early Childhood participants get their pieces, but older children and adults can just take their work home on this Friday.

Election clarification

Filed under: General and Misc — Mr. Neidlinger at 11:47 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Dear Parents,

I want to clarify my posting of the election results. Please see the statement below which clarifies how the tie between Mrs. James and Mr. Hannan will be broken.

Please be aware that the LSC does not “decide the appointment” in case
of a tie. See pages 31-32 of the CPS election guide. Ties are to be
broken by lottery at the meeting of the LSC to certify election results.
The names of the candidates tied for last place are to be written on
uniform pieces of paper and drawn from a clear bowl by a non-LSC member.

In addition, I would like to remind everyone using this blog that it was set up as an informational source and should be used accordingly.

Thank you,

Mr. Neidlinger

Happy Earth Day.

Filed under: General and Misc — Mr. Neidlinger at 10:36 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Dear Parents,

Thanks to the connections of Sarah Landichio, we are sending home a bag full of seedballs with each of our students, teachers, lunchroom staff, janitorial staff and administrators. These are very clever little seed packets that are hand-rolled by individuals with disabilities and require nothing more than opening the packet, tossing on top of the soil and keeping moist. Please take this opportunity with your child to create a bit of beauty in the world. It will be a memorable moment for both of you in the warm months to come. Thank you Mrs. Landichio for making this possible.

Sincerely,

Mr. Neidlinger

Picture Day on Friday.

Filed under: General and Misc — Mr. Neidlinger at 10:29 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Dear Parents,

Please remember that picture day has been moved to Friday. These are spring pictures and need not be purchased until after you’ve seen the proofs. Friday will also be a non-uniform day. Please plan accordingly.

LSC Election results

Filed under: General and Misc — Mr. Neidlinger at 10:14 pm on Thursday, April 17, 2008

Elementary schools across the city held their LSC elections today and Drummond’s was particularly popular. We had 10 parents and 4 community members throw their name in the hat to represent you and our students here at Drummond. Tonights results are as follows:

Nicole Cantello - 225
Jonathan Goldman - 211
Mark Kwiatkowski - 192
Mike Walther - 189
Sabrina Craig - 109
Mike Hannan - 101
Jennifer James - 101
Jorge Salas - 96
Marques Martin-Hayes - 64
Mary Zerkel - 62

The top 6 candidates are elected as our parent representatives however, Drummondd has a tie for 6th place and this means that the current council decides the appointment or the tie breaker.

As for community members:

Scott Trotter - 118
Connie Grunwald - 76
John Hennelly - 71
Greg Ahern - 38

The top two candidates will be our new Community representatives.

I want to express my pleasure in seeing so many candidates apply to our schools’ LSC. The fact that so many individuals want to support our students and our teachers in their academic pursuits is really something to appreciate. I want to congratulate the winning candidates of this evening and tell you how much I look forward to the rich dialogue we will have regarding our students. I also want to thank our current LSC council who has done an extraordinary job of guiding our school through some significant changes over the past two years. I appreciate all that you have done on behalf of our school.

Thank you all and goodnight.

Mr. Neidlinger
