A simple issue that was confusing for us was lunch. We were never informed about the forms that had to be filled out (or waived) for the subsidized lunch program. Initially we did not know you had to pay for lunch. We find it easier to pack a meal. With kids with food restrictions it is also good to let the parents know what snacks they will be reciving and who to make aware of allergies etc.

do you know how working parents have dealt with the year round schedule? what options have other families found for the 2 weeks off in oct, and again in april, as well as the regular half day and closed school days that are not in sync with holidays that most jobs give time off for? our jobs do not allow us that much vacation time.

What about including guidelines for where to park at pick-up and drop-off? More specifically, letting people know that for the safety of the kids playing in the lot, its suggested that you find street parking and walk your child to the line in the morning. Double parking on the Honore is discouraged.

Will any information be included about the Afterschool Program?

1) Is there any homework required? at what grades does it start?
2) How does school communications, letters, the newsletter get to the parents.ie.. the 'BackPack Express'
3) Guidelines on Birthday celebrations in the classrooms, and holiday celebrations.

Questions ideas...
thxs Carly/Sabrina for your hard work pulling this together.

hey carly,
this is going to be soooo helpful! it would have saved me several sleepless nights spent worrying about the tiniest details of my child's first school experience.

I would add to the bathroom description that little ones are always accompanied by an older child when they go to the bathroom during the day, and that teachers are available to assist any child who needs a little help with the process.

My initial questions were: How does the Montessori program adjust to Illinois state learning standards and prepare students for the standardized tests that impact the school's report card and eventually play a role in acceptance of students to high schools? What should I be doing at home to fill the gaps and get the most out of the program?
